Trauma Counselling

Some of the content written here about dealing with trauma may trigger thoughts or feelings that you need to talk through with someone. Make sure you have a support person available. Above all, look after yourself.

Dealing With Trauma Counselling Services

Trauma can result from a single event such as a sexual assault/rape or witnessing a horrible event, or from a series of ongoing events such as the trauma that is experienced from childhood sexual abuse. Evidence has concluded that there can be significant impact whether you are a witness or the person the act was done to. This is particularly true for children for example who grew up in homes where they repeatedly witnessed family violence.

The deep emotional response if not adequately processed can cause a long-lasting impact that can affect your physical, emotional and mental well-being. People might experience shock, denial, flashbacks or physical symptoms such as sleep paralysis. Some people find they experience reduced immunity so are constantly getting sick. The overwhelming emotions can negatively impact on your relationships and employment. Some seek out comfort in substance use or alcohol.
